Hi, Ron.
</span><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">Funny, you should bring this up. I was hoping for a chance
to mention the east vs. west differences, myself. I was thinking about
a poll that was linked to this site a couple of years ago regarding
language perception. The poll had sound samples representing different
lowlands languages and we were asked to rate percieved distances
between the speakers language and our own. As I recall, American
English was represented by someone with such a strong eastern seaboard
speech type that I found it somewhat hard to listen to and a bit
"foreign." A british English speaker sounded much closer to the speech
I grew up with.
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">But that's phonetics, and I digress. Here's the opinion of one Alaskan who's parents were both from the Pacific Northwest:
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"><em> Corridors</em> belong in larger buildings, not private houses.
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> <em>Hallways</em> belong in homes.
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> A root <em>cellar</em> may be under a house but has an outside entrance.
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> If access is attained via a stairway inside the house, it's a <em>basement.</em>
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;"> <em>First floor</em> is the ground floor in my dialect.
</p><p style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">My two pennies worth.
