Areas of what are now Eastern Germany, Poland, etc., were previously (somewhat thinly) inhabited mostly by what are considered East Germanic communities (Burgundians, Goths, Gotones, Rugians, Scirians, Vandals, etc., and also Langobards). Most of those, however, migrated to other areas and thus largely vacated those regions.
<br><br>There are various theories (and a lot of romantic notions) as to Slavic ethnogenesis and migration. It is clear, though, that there was a series of northward migrations from roughly the area of the Balkans. Some of the migrating bands moved into the then largely vacated regions, though personally I would not be surprised to find that they absorbed remnants of East Germanic populations.
