consulting my sources, since all they show is that you have already covored the 
ground thoroughly</div>

its obvious etymology Chamber's Etymological seems to consider it important that 
the container is tin, both for tea & munitions, but gives little further 
input. I sit here with a charming book on Historical Meteorology (A E Merriman; 
J M Dent & Sons, 1953).  Like the boy's book report in which he wrote 
'It tells one more than one wants to know about whales', every kind & 
condition of pre-classical, classical & post-classical units of every 
measure conceiveable, canistro or related form do not feature.</div>

<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif;">This doesn't say much of 
course. A basket is by its very nature open to specification for a host of 
different burdens & measures large & small.</div>
