<br>but only when the clearing was made by axes, or the<br>like.<br>Placenames ending on ...lo were clearings made by<br>fire.<br><br>Placenames containing laar/laren also indicate a<br>clearing in the wood, but one that is a meadow or the
<br>like, i.e. suitable for cattle. In the Netherlands<br>'Laar' always was on the level of the water-surface<br>[the best for grass]; the German Laar's could be on a<br>higher level.<br><br>So far for today.<br>
