<br><br>>This is all a bit ironic, when I think back to the riots of 1976. They were sparked by the use of Afrikaans and >English, rather than English exclusively, as education languages in non-white schools.<br><br>

(This was in the rural northern-western Cape where English was very rarely heard, let alone studied :-)

problems exists in [north] India within the movement to
reinsert/renovate Hindi as an lingua franca alternative to English</span>. <br><br></div> I can never really understand why people actually <span style="font-style: italic;">want </span>their
language to become a lingua franca. A bit of imperialist pride?
general laziness (don't need to learn a new language when I travel)? It
actually diminishes the identity of the "home" nation. I appreciate the
value of an international language; I just often wish it was somebody
