would have thought that N. African Arabic, certainly from the Magreb
(Algeria, Morocco etc) is as African as Afrikaans.  From what I was
told, it differs from Classical Arabic at least as much as Afrikaans
does from Netherlands.</div>  <div style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"> </div>  <div style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The question of
"indigenous" status is a bit of a thorny one isn't it? Is English a
"native American" language? it's been there at least as long as
Afrikaans in Africa.  Spanish even longer, and in the latter case S.
American Spanish or Castillano is quite distinct from the Iberian
version.  If it comes to that Apache is almost as far from its Alaskan
