Ein Glomssack ist ein Sack, darinnen die litauischen Glomskäse aufbewahrt werden, die nicht so klein sind wie die zu Suhla im preußischen Henneberg, welches wohl die kleinsten Käschen auf der Welt sind, daher Gamaschenknöpfe genannt, und sonderlich appetitlich und köstlich. Zu Memel aber hing das Abbild eines litauischen Käsesackes in Erz gegossen und zwei Zentner schwer an der äußeren Festungsbrücke und diente als Gewicht beim Auf- und Niederziehen.
</font><br><br><font style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Einstmals ward Memel vom König Erich von Schweden hart belagert, wehrte sich auf das tapferste, zehrte aber auch so, und zuletzt war es mit dem Proviant Matthäi am letzten und Schmalhans sehr bedeutend Küchenmeister. Der ganze Vorratrest bestand in einem handlichen Glomskäse, und da dachten die Belagerten: Übergeben müssen wir uns doch, ob wir nun erst noch diesen Käse verspeisen oder nicht. Sie nahmen also den Käse und einen Glomssack, taten ihn hinein, luden ihn auf eine Blide und warfen ihn in das feindliche Lager, daß die Schweden dachten: Bomben und Granaten! Was kommt da für eine höllische Bombe? Wie es nun der große Käse war, so sagten die Schweden untereinander: Wo noch so viel zu essen ist, da können wir unsern Schwedentrunk nicht anbringen. Wenn diese Käsefresser es noch zum Wegwerfen haben, während bei uns im Lager Mangel einreißt, so tun wir besser, wir ziehen ab von Memel. So sprachen sie, ließen sich den Glomskäse schmecken und zogen ab. Die Memler aber zu dankbarer Erinnerung ließen einen Glomssack mit einem Glomskäse darin zum ewigen Andenken in Erz gießen und an derselben Stelle aufhängen, wo der wirkliche Käse hinausgeschleudert worden war.
