As some of you know I am just completing a PhD in archaeology, looking</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
at the use of wall anchors (muurankers) around the world - including our</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
own North Sea and Baltic. I am using animated digital mapping, which I</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
_should_ be able to make available over the internet. So you will be</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
able to see maps where these buildings occur. Something similar could</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
be done for occurrences of language use, presence of people with</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
'Frisian' names, or indeed anything which has both a 'where' and a</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

From my point of view (an archaeologists - and we tend take the long</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
duree view, even when looking at a building that was erected in a few</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
weeks) the Hanse was not a dramatically different culture contact - long</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
and short distance trade across this part of Europe stretches back into</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
prehistory, and forwards to the present day.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

Many years ago, I was involved in a large exhibition on the Hanse, which</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
has two huge catalogues : Die Hanse - Lebenswirklichkeit und Mythos</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
