<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I come bearing greetings from our friend Roger Thijs who is currently off-line because he is traveling here in the Pacific Northwest. </span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I bear witness that our Roger is at least as kind, supportive, modest, resourceful and giving in the flesh as is his on-line persona.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I had the honor and pleasure of being Roger's guest last night at a reception given by the Belgian Trade Mission to Seattle and Vancouver. Heading the delegation was Philippe, Duke of Brabant and Heir Apparent to the Belgian Throne, as well as relevant Flemish and Walloon cabinet ministers. </span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Naturally I felt out of my element among all the business and government types. But people were kind and made me, the </span><i style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">buitenbeentje</i><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">, feel included. I felt blown away when Patricia Ceycens, Flemish Ministers for Economy, Enterprise, Science, Innovation and Foreign Trade, handed me a letter and a box on behalf of her colleague Bert Anciaux, Flemish Minister for Culture, Youth, Sport and Brussels. Below please find the text of the letter and my English translation. I might put image versions on-line in time for our 13th anniversary next month.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Obviously I take this as recognition not only of myself but of all of us, of the things Lowlands-L has been doing and hopefully will be doing in the future. So there's a feather in everyone's cap, most certainly in the caps of all of those that have gone beyond lurking and have gone the extra mile.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

<br>Betreft : Medaille<br><br>Beste heer Hahn,<br><br>Ek is baie bly. Ik ben heel blij dat ik u een medaille kan schenken voor al uw inzet voor 'Lowland Studies'.<br><br>Als Vlaams minister van Cultuur doet het genoegen vast te stellen dat personen buiten Europa zich voor de taal, cultuur en geschiedenis van de Lage Landen interesseren. Die keuze is niet evident, want het Nederlands behoort niet tot de wereldtalen. Niettemin hebben de Verenigde Provinciën wel degelijk hun stempel op de geschiedenis gedrukt. Welke persoon met Nederlands als moedertaal kent niet het zinnetje: "Hebben olla vogola nestas hagunnan hinase ic enda thu wat unbidan we nu?" In elk geval staat het vast dat het hier om Ingweoons gaat, Ingweoons dat men - ook nu nog -in de kustgebieden van de Noordzee spreekt. Een taal die van Zuid-Vlaanderen tot Friesland reikt. Maar ik vertel u waarschijnlijk niets nieuws, want als kenner van de Lowlands-talen bent u ongetwijfeld hét aanspreekpunt.<br>
Uw onderzoek is buitengewoon interessant; niet alleen voor het Nederlands, maar ook voor het Afrikaans, Fries, Schots, Nederduits enz. Een laudatio kan en mag dan ook niet ontbreken. Als Vlaams minister van Cultuur doe ik er alles aan om onze taal, ons erfgoed en alles over onze cultuur levendig te houden, te ondersteunen en te belichten. Iedereen die daaraan meehelpt, helpt ook mij met deze taak.<br>
<br>Mijn absolute favoriet onder de talen die u bestudeert is zonder twijfel het Afrikaans. Deze jonge taal spreekt tot mijn verbeelding door haar woordenschat. Het fascineert me hoe creatief de Afrikaners anglicismen vermijden met woorden als 'grote broer-koekeloer', 'moltrein', 'duikweg' en `flaterwater'. Ik vind het zo fantastisch mooi.<br>
<br>Alle Lowlandstalen, gaan terug op het Germaans. Ze zijn vertakkingen van eenzelfde stamboom. Deze talen bezitten dus gemeenschappelijke kenmerken, maar ze hebben ook elk hun eigen wetmatigheden. Het zich daarin kunnen verdiepen, betekent voor filologen het neusje van de zalm. En beste heer Hahn, u draagt daar mijn bewondering voor weg.<br>
<br>De laatste jaren ten slotte zijn steeds meer volkeren bewust van hun culturele identiteit en ze uiten hun eigenheid door het spreken van hun oorspronkelijke taal. U levert zeker een bijdrage aan deze bewustwording!<br>
<br>Interesse in taal is één ding, maar zich met het grootste enthousiasme in zoveel verwante talen verdiepen en wetmatigheden onderzoeken, dat verdient een pluim. Die pluim bied ik u aan in de vorm van een medaille.<br><br>

<br>In my capacity as Flemish Minister of Culture, it gives me pleasure to note that persons outside Europe are interested in language, culture and history of the Low Countries. The choice is not obvious since Dutch does not count among the world's dominant languages. Nonetheless, the United Provinces have in fact left their historical marks. What person whose native language is Dutch does not know the sentence <i>Hebben olla vogola nestas hagunnan hinase ic enda thu wat unbidan we nu</i>? In any case, it is evident that we are dealing with Inveonic that is still being spoken in the North Sea coast regions, one language from Southern Flanders to Friesland. But this is most likely no news to you, since as an adept in Lowlands languages you are undoubtedly the referent.<br>
<br>Your research is extraordinarily interesting, not only with regard to Dutch but also with regard to Afrikaans, Frisian, Scots, Low German etc. So praise can and must not be wanting. As the Flemish Minister of Culture I do all I can to keep alive, support and promote our language, our heritage and all things that make up our culture. Everyone that participates in this also helps me to that end.<br>
<br>My absolute favorite among the languages that you study is undoubtedly Afrikaans. It seems to me that this young language has its eloquence in its vocabulary. It fascinates me how creatively Afrikaners avoid English loans with words such as <i>grote broer-koekeloer</i>, <i>moltrein</i>, <i>duikweg </i>en <i>flaterwater</i>. I find it quite lovely.<br>
<br>All Lowlands languages can be traced back to Germanic. They are branches and twigs of the same family tree. These languages therefore have features in common, but they all have their own structures. Being immersed in this means the world to a philologist. And for this, dear Mr. Hahn, you are taking home my admiration.<br>
<br>For the past few years more and more peoples have been growing aware of their cultural identities, and they express their uniqueness by speaking their original languages. Surely you are contributing to this growing awareness!<br>
<br>Interest in language is one thing, but immersing oneself in the study of the structures of so many related languages with so much enthusiasm deserves a feather in one's cap. I am offering you this feather in the form of a medal.<br>
