<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Today's "New
Scientist" contains an article by Michael Erard "English as she is
spoke" which details how fast English is changing - mostly due to its
widespread use as a global language; he gives examples of English as
spoken round the world but most interestingly quotes research done re
the speeding up of the move from irregular to regular verbs  and
contradicts earlier research about the 'constancy of consonants'. He is
of the opinion that especially in global English some consonant
clusters will fade i.e. friend >> frien  ( or even fren?)  'send'
> 'sen'   'accept' > 'assep' etc etc</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Erard's book " Um .. slips, stumbles and verbal blunders, and what they mean" has just been / is about to be published.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">He also gives
examples of words which now mean different things depending on the
country where the English is being spoken and by whom.</p>
