The "by" ending in much of England and Scotland comes from old Danish
rule. "By" means "small town" in Danish. Other common words is English
and Scottish: "kirke" (kirke/church), "baern" (children), "hus"
(house), dale (dale), etc.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

By the way, Mark Kurlansky, in his entertaining book, "Salt" claims
that the ending "wik," "wich," or "wyk" indicates a place where salt is
