<div><font size="2">Some time ago Ron had questions about "rolling" the uvular
R.</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">Actually a rolling uvular R is quite common for Belgian Dutch
speakers from Brussels, Tongeren, ... (towns relatively close to the
language border), even Ghent (town with a French speaking bourgeoisie for a long
time).</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">I found a book today with a brief instruction how to learn and
how (not) to pronounce both rR as commonly heard in Belgian Dutch (In the
Netherlands they even have a larger variety of "r"s).</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">I scanned:</font></div>
<div><font size="2">- for the <b>apico-alveolar r</b>:</font></div>
<div><font size="2"><a href="http://www.euro-support.be/temp/apal.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.euro-support.be/temp/apal.jpg</a></font></div>
<div><font size="2">- for the <b>uvular R</b>:</font></div>
<div><font size="2"><a href="http://www.euro-support.be/temp/uv.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.euro-support.be/temp/uv.jpg</a></font></div>
<div><font size="2">Ron, pse try exercise nr 30. I'm sure it will
work.</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">What is listed as "fout" (error) may be heard incidentally as
variant.</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">Both are scanned from:</font></div>
<div><font size="2">Greet Huybrechts e.a., "<b>Articulatie in de praktijk:
consonanten</b>", Acco, Leuven & Voorburg, zesde druk, 2007, ISBN
978-90-334-4030-4, 280 pp.</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">The book is not very interesting for learning scientifically
about pronounciation. It is more a collection of "<i>long lists of words</i>"
for each phoneme in combination with other relevant and intentionally choosen
phonemes as <i>exercise material for patients of logopedists</i>.</font></div>
<div> </div>
<div><font size="2">There is a similar publication for vowels:</font></div>
<div><font size="2">Greet Huybrechts e.a., "<b>Articulatie in de praktijk:
vocalen en diftongen</b>", Acco, Leuven & Voorburg, zesde druk, 2007,
ISBN 978-90-334-4031-1, 123 pp.</font></div>

<li>Gargling with head tilted back, saying R while bringing head back up</li><li>R between two vowels: aaRaa, eeRee ...</li><li>In combination with a back consonant, preferably k: kRaa, kRee ...</li><li>The gradually omitting the kRaa, kRaa, Raa ..</li>
<li>Practicing the rest of the possible combinations and positions</li></ul>By the way, I think the clearest pronunciation of the trilled uvular r is that of the recording for the Wren translation in Nieuwpoort West Flemish: <a href="http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/westvlams2.php">http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/westvlams2.php</a><br>
