<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">French <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">aussi</span></em> was <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">alsi</span></em> in Ancient French. This is a contraction of Vulgar
Latin *<em><span style="font-family: Arial;">alid</span></em> (for <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">aliud, </span></em>which meant 'something else') and <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">sic</span></em>, 'such, this way'. Cf. 'aussi
... que', where 'aussi' means 'as', and where it has no semantic link with
'also'. Although "also" does :-) (are you still with me?)</span></p>

to Chernyh (2002), Russian <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">a</span></em>
derives from an Indo-European root *<em><span style="font-family: Arial;">od, </span></em>and
according to Derksen from (h₁)o:d. Chernyh sees the word as the
later genitive suffix in Slavonic: <em><span style="font-family: Arial;">-ego</span></em>   </span></p>
