They are a descriptive normally of a physical feature, and feature strongly in
the Tutonic languages, not so much in the Gaelic languages where the persons
patronage and clan affiliation were the predomint source of the name.
Basically, every Irish - native name - is a tribe name, as opposed to a
physical attribute...<br>
<br>
A notable exception is Doyle and McDowell, being from "dubh gall" -
black foriegneor, from the hair colour of the Norwegian Vikings, illustarating
how the physical was used for newcomers as opposed to the native.<br>
<br>
Some Irish surnames are trade related, such as McGowan / Gavin / Smith from
MacGabhainn (anglicized to smith when irhs was illegal, most Irish Smiths have
no English or German roots, and are not related to the names Smith, Smyth, or
Schmidt).<br>
<br>
A small few may be of Palatine origion, and may come from Schmidt.<br>
