If one wants to show his dismay for something, he/she could say "ei",
"eik" or "eikes" (B). I've also heard the variant
"eizes" (instead of "eikes") though. If "eik" is
not cognate with English "eek" (exclamation), and of onomatopoetic
nature, maybe they are related to Middle Dutch "edik" (vinegar),
which is still in use in the Northern Netherlands.
I can imagine that the taste of vinegar was once associated with disgust (among
children).</span></p>
