Yes, Arend, American "(split) pea soup" <i>is</i> more or less the same as your
<i>erwtensoup</i> and what we call <i>arf(t)ensup</i> (<i>Arf(t)ensupp</i>, German
<i>Erbsensuppe</i>) in Northern Germany.<br>
<br>
There are various recipes, depending on a family's ethnic heritage. Most of the
time they are the same or similar to those of the Continental European Lowlands,
and I would not be surprised to find out that the predominant American version goes
back to Dutch and/or German or perhaps Scandinavian immigrants. However, these days
the soup tends to be slimmed down, being either served without meat or with diced
ham instead of large, fatty chunks of animals' extremities and other body parts.<br>
