Subject: Traditions<br>
<br>
Folks,<br>
<br>
Above, our Hanne shares a few examples of Sweden and Swedes in the traditions of
Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. She does so in response to what we have been
saying about Sweden under "History". Please bear in mind that Mecklenburg and
Western Pomerania are pretty much exactly south of Sweden and that it was a part of
the Swedish Empire (1611–1718). Note also that a lot of references to Sweden and
Swedes are positive in the local folklore.<br><br>Dank di, leve Hanne!<br>
<br>
Hanne's posting seems like a nice basis for an article at our Traditions site (<a href="http://lowlands-l.net/traditions/">http://lowlands-l.net/traditions/</a>).<br>

<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">Hanne adds that
the Schwedenfest of the city of Wismar is a celebration
of friendship with Sweden. In Wismar there is a historic building called <i>Alter Schwede</i> ("Old Swede"). </span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><i>Alter Schwede</i> can also serve as a form of address like "old friend". Let me add that it can also serve as an expression of surprise, usually in a positive sense. Furthermore, it is a type of cheese in Hanne's neck of the woods. Near Hamburg's district of Övelgönne there is a large glacial erratic on the Elbe bank; it, too, is called <i>Alter Schwede</i> (<a href="http://tinyurl.com/bj859e">http://tinyurl.com/bj859e</a>).</span><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><br>
