Subject: Etymology<br>
<br>
I asked about one of the names for the Estonian bagpipes:</span></p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> </span></p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; margin-left: 40px;" class="MsoNormal"><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">Kotepill</span></i><span style="font-size: 11pt;"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> I am not sure about, but I wonder
if </span><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">kote</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> is related to 'cottage', 'homestead', which in Modern Estonian
is </span><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">kodu</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">, besides borrowed </span><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">kotedž</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);"> (cf. Finnish </span><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">koti</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">, Veps </span><i style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">kodi</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">).
If there is such a link, this is one of my favorite etyma with possible Eurasian
spread (*"permanent building/settlement" > "city", cf. "hut",
cottage, </span><i>kota</i><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153);">).</span></span></p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;"> </span></p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">Could it be
possible that <i>kote...</i>is an older reference to "Scot(land)" (<
*<i>skote...</i>)?<br>
<br>
By this I mean something older than the currently used, probably German-derived
<i>šoti</i> and <i>šotlane</i> 'Scot', 'Scottish' (perhaps borrowed via Russian,
<i>шотландец, шотландский</i></span> etc.<span style="font-size: 11pt;">).<br>
<br>
Minu südamliku tervitused kõigile,<br>
