had a detective series set in Amsterdam (can't recall the name but it
had a catchy tune)."</p>

<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">It was called "Van der Valk" .. the name of the detective but it was
an English production set in Holland. he was played by Barry Foster.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The only German programmes with subtitles I can recall were Das Boot (already mentioned) and also Heimat.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I too remember the beautiful shadow plays on children's TV that came
from Czechoslovakia, I think  - but then programmes like this are
easily dubbed. I am sure most British children were unaware that Magic
Roundabout was not an original UK production! ( who reads credits?)</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Did any one mention the number of Australian soaps and films we get?</p>
