Subject: Traditions<br><br>Looking ahead toward the coming weekend, Hanne talks about the Christian holiday of Pentecost, or Whitsun.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">In particular she talks about the Low Saxon folk tradition of connecting this holiday (</span><i style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Pinksten</i><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">) with the golden oriole (</span><i style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Oriolus oriolus</i><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">). It's Low Saxon names are </span><font style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" size="2"><i>Pingstvagel </i>("Whitsun bird"), <i>Vagel Bülow</i>, <i>Schult von
Bülow</i>, and I will add here <i>Wewolk</i> or <i>Wewulk</i>. Apparently this is so because the bird returns to the woods when they have turned fully green. Whitsuntide is traditionally considered the begin of the warm season and growing season, and people decorate their houses with fresh green twigs and flowers.<br>
