Maybe it is because I've been hearing so much Romanian and Italian
lately, but Limburgish "singing" inevitably makes me think that it may
just have been the way that Roman villa owners were trying to adapt to
the speech of invading Germanic bands, once that the Empire started to
collapse. An areal feature indeed, Cologne and its hinterland have a
rich Roman history. Which cannot be said of Frisia: Frisia non cantat,
from a Roman viewpoint. And a stiff upper lip doesn't exactly give way
to singing either. Scandinavian "singing" could be an entirely
different evolution altogether.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
