guy "Zandmanneke" brings back sweet memories, as the series was on
Belgian tv when I was a kid. Am not sure whether it was the West- or
East-German version, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was the Eastern
one, since many programs for kids were imported from the "Oostblok".
Apparently, Belgium was not the only country, Norway was also flooded
with Eastern European programs for children, and fairly recently a
movie has been made on this subject "Sandman, the story of a socialist

that Mister Sandman grew into a mascot for the German Democratic

Sandman himself had a darker side too *s*. He's said to scatter sand in
children's eyes in order to make them blind (wonder if the GDR was
aware of this metaphor), then steal their eyes and feed them to his own
kids, who reside on the moon (translate "Apparatschik", "Moscow" *s*).
Of course, children who didn't want to go to bed would believe this,
because in the morning they would still feel some sort of sandy feeling
