<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Subject (I think - still?) Lexicon</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I have been reading a fascinating book about Queen Elizabeth 1st. In
it the author quotes a visiting ambassador by name of Paul Hentzner (
a German?) who says</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">" As (the Queen) went along.. she spoke very graciously, first to
one and then to another, whether foreign Ministers or those who
attended for different reasons, in English, French and Italian; for
besides being skilled in Greek, Latin and the languages I have
mentioned, she is mistress of Spanish, Scotch and Dutch."</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">My questions are :-</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">What do you think he meant by 'Scotch'? Lallans or Gaelic?</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">And what do you think was meant by Dutch? Is this just a convenient
translation to cover all languages from the Netherlands when this was
written in 1598 or was Dutch by this time a clearly defined language
from Flemish, Brabantish etc etc?</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Or does it mean 'Deutsch' as in Pennsylvania Dutch?</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">best wishes to all</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">from Heather who was only surprised last night that another attempt
to blow up Parliament did not take place ( joke!) and who wonders how
many 'guys' on bonfires last night had the face of the local MP.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">from a UK still reeling from the scandal of MPs' Â expenses</p><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
