Liebe Lowlanders,<br>
neulich ist es mir tatsächlich passiert, dass ich die Namen der Städte
Dangast und Wolgast verwechselt habe. Dabei ist Dangast friesisch und
Wolgast slawisch. Zu Wolgast habe ich auch Hinweise auf die
Wortherkunft gefunden, zu Dangast nicht. Weiß jemand, was "Dangast"
bedeutet und wieso Dangast so heißt, beinahe wie Wolgast, das doch
praktisch am anderen Ende der Krone des plattdeutschen Eekbooms liegt?

Der Name Holtgast entstand durch die landschaftliche Beschaffenheit des
Dorfgebietes. Während die erste Silbe „Holt“ auf einige Gehölze in der
Gemarkung hinweisen, gibt es für die zweite Silbe zwei
Deutungsmöglichkeiten. Denn das Dorf liegt mit den Nachbarorten Utgast
und Hartsgast auf einem großflächigen, verhältnismäßig fruchtbaren
Geestrücken, der sich durch abgelagerten Flugsand auf
wasserundurchlässige Geschiebemergelschichten nach den Saale- und
Weichsel-Kaltzeiten bildete. Solche Flächen nennt man in Ostfriesland
“Gaste“ und anderswo auch “Esch“. Zudem entstanden hier im zehnten
Jahrhundert Gemeinschaftsäcker, die ebenfalls mit “Gaste“ bezeichnet
wurden. Davon abgeleitet lautete der Ortsname bis ins 19. Jahrhundert
„Holtgaste“. Später wurde daraus Holtgast und bedeutet „bewaldeter
Geestrücken“.</span><br style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

haben sich schon andere die gleiche Frage gestellt – da gibt es eine
recht umfassende Diskussion. In Kürze: Die (west-) slawische Nachsilbe
Gast leitet sich von slawisch “gost” oder “gast” her (deutsche
Bedeutung “Neuankömmling” oder “Gast”), welche oftmals Bestandteil von
Personennamen ist. In Ortnamen findet sie sich im gesamten
westslawischen Siedlungsgebiet. Das friesische “gast” (wie in “Dangast”
und noch über 20 weiteren friesischen Ortsnamen) entspricht LS “Geest”
= “hochgelegenes Ackerland “- Sollte gut zu Dangast passen – scheinbar
die einzige K¨stengemeinde Ostfireslands die keinen Deich
benötigt, da sie auf einem eiszeitlichen Geestrücken liegt.<br>
