Plattdeutsch soll künftig als vollwertiges Unterrichtsfach an<br>
Hamburger Schulen gelehrt werden. Bisher sei die Regionalsprache vor<br>
allem in freiwilligen Arbeitsgemeinschaften unterrichtet worden,<br>
teilte das Bremer Institut für niederdeutsche Sprache am Donnerstag<br>
mit. Hamburg sei damit das erste Bundesland, das Plattdeutsch als<br>
vollwertiges Fach anerkenne.<br><br>
Im Sommer dieses Jahres sollten die Richtlinien in Kraft treten, nach<br>
denen Platt als vollwertige Sprache unterrichtet werden könne, hieß es<br>
weiter. Der in Norddeutschland bislang einmalige Schritt mit der<br>
Umstellung des Schulsystems auf die Primarschule vollzogen worden. Für<br>
die ersten bis dritten Klassen seien zwei Wochenstunden eingeplant, in<br>
den Klassen vier bis sechs stehe Plattdeutsch dreimal auf dem<br>
Stundenplan.<br><br>
Neben dem Platt-Snacken strebe der Unterricht auch das Kennenlernen<br>
und Umgehen mit Besonderheiten der regionalen Kultur an, teilte das<br>
Institut weiter mit. So seien Kontakte mit Sprechern ebenso vorgesehen<br>

Folks, to give you an idea of what’s be transpiring here let me just summarize
it by saying that the Senate of the German city state Hamburg has decided to permit
schools under its jurisdiction to introduce two periods of “Platt” (Low Saxon) weekly.
The curriculum appears to be envisaged as developing mostly passive language
comprehension as well as cultural components and events, with some
out-of-doors activities such as visits to street markets where the language can
still be heard. Of course, if this came about it would be a first step toward
enticing some students into furthering their knowledge later.<br>
<br>
I wonder if this is genuine of if the Senate merely wants to "cover its butt" by creating the
impression of complying with the European Languages Charter. If schools do not
participate because it is optional and possibly because they don’t have the
resources, the Senate would probably saying something like “Well, <i style="">we</i> did our part, but they aren’t
participating.”<br>
