had some thoughts about greetings.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">I'm doing a
project in the Namur area in Wallonia,
and the classical greeting procedure in the morning is:</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="FR">First person: "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Bonjour, ça va?"</span></strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Second
person: depending on the relationship "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Et toi?"</span></strong> or "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Et vous?".</span></strong></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Nobody
waits for an eventual answer for any of these questions, when meeting in the
morning.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">When
leaving in the evening the standard is "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Bonne soirée</span></strong>" ("soirée" denotes a time
period while "soir" denotes a moment)</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">In my
Limburgish the standard when meeting was "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Doag </span></strong>+ Name".</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">In
Vliermaal the standard when leaving was "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Had oech gowd</span></strong>".</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">In
Schalkhoven, a mile to the East, the formula when leaving was "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Dzjus</span></strong> + name", probalby related
to the German "Tschüs"</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">When asking
"<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Wai és het?"</span></strong>
</span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;" lang="NL">(Hoe is het? Hoe gaat het? </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">How are things?) one could expect a reply of up to 10 minutes, so I
would not recommend it when in a hurry.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">I once did
a summer job in Essen Germany. The standard greeting was
"<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Mahlzeit</span></strong>"
from the morning till about 2 pm.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Â </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">How about
other LL area's? "<strong><span style="font-family: Arial;">Moin, moin</span></strong>"
and others.</span></p>
