wondering if it came via the Bargoens cant and Yiddish (<i>levaye</i>)
from Hebrew <i>lĕwāyāh</i>
(לְוָיָה) 'funeral' (an occasion of loud wailing). Of course I consider
it possible that the two Hebrew words are etymologically linked.</font><br>
