<br>
So what? There are big trends in English these days towards more<br>
productive use of the lexicon, with people saying things like "Are you<br>
Whitbying this year?", "I'm not deaf, I'm a hearie" and so on.<br>
"Shetlandic" isn't exactly without precedent (Icelandic, Greenlandic,<br>
Turkic). Assuming you're aware of the dialects/language, you'd have to<br>
be deliberately pretending if you said you didn't understand the term.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">"Shetlandish"
sounds more logical to me than "Shetlandic".</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">Just like
"Turkic" is rather the name for a whole language family (whereas
"Turkish" is but the name of a single member), the use of
"Shetlandic" suggests that the linguistic landscape of the Shetlands
these days is very diverse and consists of many different, but mutually related
sister languages.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;"> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial;">"Shet-landish"
on the other hand is similar to "out-landish"...even a formation like
"Shettish" doesn't sound too weird to me, conform to English,
Scottish and Irish.</span></p>
