Negerhollands was a Zeeuws-based creole, for some 250 years spoken<br>
exclusively on the Danish Virgin Islands, by African slaves and<br>
European masters alike. The language was replaced by (creole) English<br>
by the late 1800s and the Last Speaker, Alice Stevens, died in 1987.<br>
It was the first creole language to be called so, it was the first<br>
creole to have a grammar published (1770) and an unusually large<br>
volume of – mainly, but not only religious – texts in Negerhollands<br>
have survived.<br>
<br>
Of course the article is in Danish, the language angels speak on<br>
Sundays, but automatic translation by Google or rule-based<br>
Gramtrans.com will give others a good idea of the contents, too :-)<br>
