bezeichnete ursprünglich einen guten Hausgeist, dann allgemein einen neckischen
Geist, der Gutes tun oder Schaden anrichten kann (vgl. Kobalt). Es handelt sich
wahrscheinlich um eine verdunkelte Zusammensetzung, deren erster Bestandteil
das unter 'Koben' "Verschlag, Stall, Häuschen" behandeltes Wort ist,
während der zweite Bestandteil zu 'hold' (vgl. 'Unhold' und 'Frau Holle') oder
zu 'walten' (vgl. -walt in Zusammensetzungen) gehören kann. Demnach würde
'Kobold' eigentlich "Stall-, Hausgeist" bzw. "Stall-,
Hauswalter" bedeuten. Siehe auch Kobolz, einen Purzelbaum schlagen. Die
Bedeutung "Purzelbaum" bezieht sich auf das neckische, quirlige
Gebaren eines Kobolds.</p>
