it's not really a new word. There are three categories for the Low Saxon Word of the Year: Word of the Year
(any typical Low Saxon word that has a distinct meaning), New Word of the Year
(any Low Saxon word that was coined in recent times and hits the mark), Phrase
of the Year (any Low Saxon saying or proverb).<br>
<br>
Although I really like the idea and think that it's a great method to further
Low Saxon, I'd wish they would choose their winners more carefully. In the
category New Word of the Year in 2004 "Klappräkner" won (meaning
'laptop', 'notebook', literally "fold/shut calculator"), which is a
nice word, but which is just a reflex of the High German purism 'Klapprechner',
not a native Low Saxon creation. In 2005 "Lämmerhüppen" won (meaning
'disco', 'night club', literally "hopping of lambs"), a word that no
disco visitor ever would use. It's rather a word that very old people would use
as a humourous or derogatory term to describe the activity of their
grandchildren. In 2006 "Fixrühr" won (meaning 'blender' and
'microwave', literally "quick churn" [in the case of 'blender'] and
"quick tube" [in the case of 'microwave']). The word actually sounds
okay, but it seems to be a total neologism. Not "newly coined" but
"unheard of before". In 2007 "Ackerschnacker" won (meaning
'mobile phone', literally "field speaker"). The term is not new. It
was coined decades ago and first was used as a word for "field
telephone" and "walkie-talkie". In 2008 "Bankenmalür"
won (meaning 'financial crisis', literally "bank mishap"). That one
actually is a quite good choice.<br>
