I know that in German <i>Schildpadd</i> specifically denotes the material of
the shell (and in extension tortoiseshell cats), but I believe that it is a
loan from the Low Saxon for ‘turtle’ or 'tortoise'. "Turtle” and
“tortoise” are <i>Schildkröte</i> in Standard German.</span></p>

<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">Middle Saxon 'schildepadde'
existed (Schiller-Lübben: Mittelniederdeutsches Wörterbuch, p. 90) and Danish
and Swedish are indeed Middle Saxon loans (Dansk Etymologisk Ordbog, Gyldendals
Røde Ordbøger, p. 373; Svensk Etymologisk Ordbog <a href="http://runeberg.org/svetym/0865.html" target="_blank"><http://runeberg.org/svetym/0865.html></a>).
The word also occurs in dictionaries of Modern Low Saxon: ten
Doornkaat-Koolman: Wörterbuch der ostfriesischen Sprache, volume 3, p. 122, and
Stürenburg: Ostfriesisches Wörterbuch, p. 217. But although they are from the
Modern Low Saxon period, they are still 150 years old. I cannot find any
reference from the 20th or 21st century. Modern texts from Germany usually
use "Schildkrööt", a loan from German.<br>
<br>
Another native word is 'schildpogge'. It's the same word as 'schildpadde', but
constructed with another synonym of 'frog'/'toad'. But no modern references for
that word too.<br>
