Like Ron said, let's challenge the Highlands...no more Highland games, just one
big competition: Lowlands vs. Highlands
UK both has Low and
Highlands, so does the Benelux, Germany,
Poland and Scandinavia.
First we have two huge international teams, each of them consisting of players
of either the Lowlands or the Highlands. First
round we try to select which team is stronger, Low or High. Second round, we
make a further selection, the winning team of the first round is split up
between the five countries, in order to decide which country finally wins.

And I breathed a sigh of releif when I read this because I was having trouble
restraining myself. Such a reply from myself, a foreigner, would have
meant little.

I have a special fondness for Lower Saxony as
the birthplace of many of my ancestors and my view is both romantic and
historical but not really contemporary. I have no real sense of the
meaning such a flag would have to those proposing it. The
continuity of such a familiar symbol chosen to show friendship
with other northern countries must have its own special appeal.
However, I must agree that it seems to me to be a symbol imposed upon a
once proud and free nation by a conquering culture.

The heritage of Saxon independence, the traditional "religion" of
home and hearth and the continuity of a uniquely lowlandish way of life has
outlasted the rule of kings and bishops. So maybe my response is silly,
but it is heartfelt.

I do find it inspiring, but
perhaps because I've grown up with exactly
the sort of "Lowlands" topography
that Ron's suggested flag represents?

The yellow band is particularly inspiring, I think, because you may
think of the rising sun on the horizon, or you may particularly think of
the change that comes before every harvest when the fields are full of
ripened wheat, oats and barley.

I was wondering about a flag representing the Scots language for the
purposes at least of the LL list (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constructed_language
for the conlang
mailing list flag, for example). Here's Ron's "Lowlands" flag:

http://sandyfleming.org/signers/ll-flag01.png

and here's my suggestion for a Scots variant:

http://sandyfleming.org/signers/ll-flag-sco.png

This is supposed to represent the way the Lowland Scottish landscape
tends to be flat, but with the occasional "law" (an isolated hill -
or
as people outside Scotland say, "mountain" - in an essentially flat
landscape) here and there.

So this has Eildon Law to the right, which is trifurcate, and some
generic law elsewhere representing the topography of much of lowland
Scotland.
Having the easily-recogisable Eildon Law gives a clue to the
graphic intent of the simple green peak.

I'm just mucking about, I don't actually mean to create more things to
start a war about :)

On the other hand, we've got a website, it might be useful or at least
colourful to have flags as graphic representations of the languages
there.

Any other ideas?
