Group, my name is William Paterson and I live just outside of Philadelphia. I have been following the list
for a while, but I have not spoken up until now, though I have very much
enjoyed following the group's discussions. </p>

reason I'm piping up now is that I have a question: Is it a horrible idea
to try to learn Old English and Old Norse more or less concurrently? </p>

<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I
have been studying OE independently for about 8 months (I also read Middle
English and Scots, Early through Modern), and I feel I do well with OE prose,
though poetry is still difficult. At this point, I am wondering if beginning to
study ON, while continuing with OE, might: </p>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">
</p>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">1.
Not interfere with learning OE, and, better; </p>
<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">

<p style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">2.
Actually shed some additional light on OE (and ME, and Scots). </p>

seems to me that because of the similarity between OE and ON, and the fact that
I will not need to speak them, maybe this is a workable plan. On the other
hand, it could be an awful idea - I just don't know. </p>
