Het woord behoort bij Staan en wordt gewoonlijk verklaard uit germ. *<strong>stadla</strong>-, en dit uit idg. *<strong>st(h)è-dhlo</strong>-, waaruit ook lat. <strong>stabulum</strong>. Daarnaast is mogelijk (zie
FRANCKV. WIJK) een idg. grondvorm *<strong>st(h)è-tló-</strong>
naast *<strong>st(h)è-tlo-,</strong>
waaruit mnl. stadel: grondslag van een dijk (zie STAAL (IV))); hierdoor zou ook
de <strong>wisseling van stal en staal</strong>
in verschillende beteekenissen (de bett. 12—14) worden verklaard.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">1) Het staan, stand. Reeds in het mnl. vooral in bepaalde verbindingen (zie
VERDAM 7, 1909 vlg.); na de middeleeuwen nog bewaard in de thans verouderde
verbinding stal houden (of hebben).........</p>
