I think you're right about
that. Several apes have shown that even
though they cannot speak, they do understand human language to a
certain degree (a chimp named Kanzi understands about 3000 English
words). Some have shown they understand sentences, composed of words
they know, but in a combination they never heared before, such as "put
A in B", meaning they have a certain understanding of grammar. They
can also be taught sign language (works best if done at a young age,
just as with humans of course), which they can use to communicate back
to humans. Some have been taught to use lexigrams (pictures
representing concepts) to communicate. And as someone else already
mentioned, apes like chimpansees also hunt together in groups, in
which they have clear roles. You can't do that without communication.
To those who are going to say that they just look at eachother's
faces: no. Experiments have been done with apes that couldn't see each
other. They were however able to communicate certain matters to the
other ape, using sound.

So yeah, there was language before speech.

 Basically, he is
saying that all people are always 'discovered' IN-SITU with a developed ETHNIC
or LINGUISTIC setting irregardless of race, religion, or CULTURAL
boundaries.

So, an 'ethnic' is a small
group setting where LANGUAGE is USED and SHARED. When they 'meet'
"OTHERS" the LANGUAGE undergoes a "CONVERSION PROCESS". The
OLDEST LANGUAGE is considered to be the 'IN-SITU' while the
"EXPLORER" lingo is the "NEWEST" so to speak, because the
"CHANGE" always oocurs to the 'VANQUISHED" or
"DISCOVERED" group. Then, after about TWO GENERATIONS of
INTERACTION...the "TIDE TURNS" so to speak, and all INNOVATION
betwixt these two "ETHNIC SECTORS" is expressed...SOLELY by means of
the VEHICLE of LANGUAGE so those who complain of 'unfair treatment' at this
time are those who refuse to accomodate the "NEW LANGUAGE.:" In other
words in MEXICO for instance the speakers of best standard Spanish have higher
privilages compared to those talking in Native AmerIndian Dialects. This was
seen and recorded first in Ireland,
but in Ancient time in DACIA
and other places where SLAVIC LANGUAGES were perhaps first developed.
