say “</span>I have no sympathy for book burning
at all. It doesn't matter for what reason they are burned. Burning books is
never okay”. Of course you are right, but that demands a reasoned reaction.
There are things about which I cannot be reasonable. Just like when I drive
over a rattlesnake I will back up and do it again; just to make sure the beast
is dead. Or saying “the only good…. (you fill in what you want) is a dead……… I
am totally aware that what I said was not reasonable. I have German friends.
“Onkel” Willy Brabender was my father’s best friend; a friendship that survived
the war. I was there when they saw each other again for the first time after
the war. Up until then I had never seen two grown men cry….. But even the
intimation of the sound of those boots does me in!</p>

course we knew that there were people in Germany who suffered as much,- if
not more so- <span style=""> </span>than we did. It must be
terrible if people with whom you identify, because you share a nationality with
them, perpetrate this inhumanity. Thank you for reminding me of that. Let’s
just hope that people will not allow that to happen again. </span></p>

<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">Zu den äußeren Zeichen der
Verbundenheit des Bürgers mit seinem Staat gehört nicht zuletzt eine Hymne, die
bei feierlichen Anlässen gemeinsam gesungen wird. Wie die Flagge der
Bundesregierung Deutschland geht auch die </p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">Nationalhymne auf die Zeit
vor der Revolution von 1848 zurück: Der Text des "Liedes der
Deutschen" wurde im Jahre 1841 auf der Insel Helgoland von August Heinrich
Hoffmann von Fallersleben zu einer Melodie von Joseph Haydn verfaßt. Er bringt
angesichts der damaligen politischen Zersplitterung in Deutschland die
Sehnsucht der deutschen Bevölkerung nach einem geeinten Vaterland zum Ausdruck.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg
erhob der erste Reichspräsident der Weimarer Republik, Friedrich Ebert, das
"Lied der Deutschen" zur deutschen Nationalhymne. Die erste Strophe
des Deutschlandliedes wurde, vor allem auch im Ausland, vielfach verkannt und
mißdeutet. Der als Aufruf gemeinte Einleitungssatz dieser Strophe:
"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" konnte jedoch in der Zeit der
politischen Uneinigkeit, in der Hoffmann von Fallersleben lebte, nur als ein
Bekenntnis verstanden werden, für das noch nicht geschaffene einige Deutsche
Reich die besten Kräfte und Gefühle einzusetzen.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">Im Jahre 1952 wurde in einem
Briefwechsel zwischen dem ersten Bundespräsidenten, Theodor Heuss, und
Bundeskanzler Konrad Adenauer das Lied wieder als Nationalhymne anerkannt.
Adenauer: "Bei staatlichen Veranstaltungen soll die dritte Strophe
gesungen <span style=""> </span>werden. " <span style=""> </span>Gerade ihr Text - "Einigkeit und Recht
und Freiheit für das deutsche Vaterland" - hat den Anspruch aller
Deutschen auf Verwirklichung ihrer staatlichen Einheit auch in den Jahrzehnten
der Teilung wachgehalten. In ihrem Briefwechsel vom August 1991 bestätigten
Bundespräsident Richard von Weizsäcker und Bundeskanzler Helmut Kohl diese
Tradition des "Liedes der Deutschen" für das <span style=""> </span>vereinigte Deutschland: "Als ein Dokument
deutscher Geschichte bildet es in allen seinen Strophen eine Einheit... Die 3.
Strophe des Liedes der Deutschen von Hoffmann von Fallersleben mit der Melodie
von Joseph Haydn ist die Nationalhymne für das deutsche Volk." </p>
