<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="color: navy;">Low Saxon: *Piepaant?<br>
Dutch: smient (< *smijdeëend?)</span></p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal">I don't know about the
English name, but in Low Saxon (at least in Groningen
and Eastern Frisia) it is "Smeent" for <i>Anas penelope </i>(the
Eurasian cousin of <i>Anas americana</i>):
<a href="http://www.plattmakers.de/?show=5952" target="_blank"><http://www.plattmakers.de/?show=5952></a>.
ten Doornkaat Koolman explains it as an obscured compositum of *smahi (related
to Scandinavian 'små') and 'Aant', thus "small duck".<br>
<br>
But in more eastern regions "Piepaant" seems to be common (<a href="http://graswarder.de/wp/?m=200810" target="_blank"><http://graswarder.de/wp/?m=200810></a>,
