value vocabulary, pronunciation (Received Standard), and something else,
whereas Americans value spelling and grammar (it seems to me the Americans had
a third item as well). Can anyone elaborate on this, confirm or deny it, based
either on scholarship or personal experience? </p>

noticiable feature for which Ive often been lambasted is the poor quality of my
spelling, which is more due to poor ability to type correct than to spell when
writing, and a complete and criminal abhorrance of wasting time editing my
typed work before clicking the irredimable SUBMIT button!</span></p>

something out on this site! All the punctuation<br>
marks are displayed as question marks for me.<br>

It's also factually inaccurate? Noah Webster studied dozens of languages<br>
to help in his spelling reform efforts, and produced a bizarre<br>
dictionary which was later bought out and republished with traditional<br>
spellings.<br>

What we now think of as "Americanised" spellings were mainly
introduced<br>
by the Chicago Tribune, I believe.<br>
<br>
I think it's a misconception to say that spelling reforms don't happen<br>
in English. Facsimile editions of older books show that changes occur,<br>
though slowly.<br>
<br>
In American English publications, some reforms catch on, others don't.<br>
"Color" etc is now considered normal, "nite" is more
dubious, "rite"<br>
seems to have been dismissed.<br>
<br>
Some things need handling with kid gloves. To many, the "wh" spelling
is<br>
irrelevant in English and a constant source of error for poorer<br>
spellers. On the other hand, it's an important distinction in some<br>
areas.<br>
