"elf" (11) de meest overtuigende sleutel voor de etymologie van het
Nederfrankisch carnavals-"Alaaf":</p>

endlifan; on. ellefo; got. ainlibim; < pgm. *ainlif ‘elf’.<br>
Meestal opgevat als samenstelling van de elementen pgm. *ain- (zie een) en pgm.
*lib(i)- < pie. *leikw- ‘overlaten’ (zie lenen), met pie. *kw > pgm. *hw
> *b /<span style="">ᤇ</span>/ zoals ook bij pie. *ulkwo-
> pgm. *wulfa- (zie wolf). Deze etymologie is gebaseerd op een soortgelijke
vorming in het Litouws waar de telwoorden elf tot en met negentien met een
tweede element -lika gevormd worden; vergelijk Oudlitouws liẽkas ‘de elfde’ en
añtras liekas ‘de twaalfde’, waarbij de betekenis geïnterpreteerd wordt als ‘de
overgeblevene’ (na tien) en de ‘andere (of tweede) overgeblevene’. Een
alternatieve verklaring is dat het bij het Germaans om een parallelle
ontwikkeling gaat uit de wortel pie. *lip- (nultrap van *leip-) zoals in
blijven.<br>
De telwoorden elf en twaalf zijn blijkbaar overblijfselen van een telsysteem
waarbij er sprake was van een twaalftallig stelsel in contrast met of naast een
tientallig stelsel.</p>

<b>Maar wat heeft het getal 11 met de carnavals-gekken te maken?</b><br>

nu net 11? Elf wordt beschouwd als het “gekkengetal”. Twaalf (12) is het getal
van perfectie sinds het schrijven van De Bijbel (12 apostelen) en ook ons
tijdsstelsel is gebaseerd op veelvouden van 12. Elf is dus net iets “minder” en
wordt daarom genomen als een getal dat bijna perfect is, maar waar toch een
hoekske af is."</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Tegen
de uitlegging "Alaaf, all - af = alles ab" spekt dat de letter-greep
"af/ab/of/off/av" in alle Indo-Europese talen steeds kort (wil zeggen
een vocaal met vaste aansluit) is, de niet gelengd worden kan.</p>
<p style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;" class="MsoNormal"><br>
De uitlegging 11=geks heeft de voordeel, dat ook de hedendaagse voetbal-
(sokker-) manie [elftal!] ermee als een uitbreiding van (krankzinnige?) gekheid
in tijd en ruim verschijnt ;-).<br style="">
