The s-r shift is apparently termed "rhoticism".  The classic case
is the change from the Proto-Germanic masculin ending <em>-az</em>, to Norse <em>-r</em>.  We also see it in the verb to be; "is"
still has the PIE sound (-<em>asti</em>), whereas
"are" has rhoticised (being a Norse influence).</p>
