re -s ending on verbs<br>

Here in Worcester city it is usual to hear (especially) children<br>
saying " I goes ... I eats.... I says<br>
<br>
I used to make a point of drawing attention to it when teaching German<br>
here. "In English you only have one ending in the present tense - an<br>
's' on 3rd person singular. You can't say for example "I goes" Whoops!<br>
Oh yes you can! Here in the city you do it all the time, don't you? "<br>
It was amazing how little aware the children were of what they were<br>
saying and that it differed from the norm heard on TV and radio or read<br>
in books and newspapers.<br>

Sorry if the subject has moved on, but I'm just picking up 64 emails<br>
after a long Bank Holiday weekend spent handing out commemorative mugs<br>
to the children of our village and holding a Royal Memorabilia<br>
Exhibition which included a slipper thrown at a bride in 1889 by the<br>
then Prince of Wales ( apparently custom in those days) and a Silver<br>
Jubilee milk bottle top saved since 1977 !<br><br>
