Subject: Phonology<br><br>Dutch <b>w</b> is most definitely <b>not</b> pronounced like German <b>w</b> ([v]). Instead, it is pronounced as a labio-dental glide (approximant): [ʋ]. (This is incorrectly given as [v] on the German webpage Hanne gave us.) Its is the usual phonetic realization of /v/ in South Asian languages, and it is the sound most South Asians use for both English <b>w</b> and English <b>v</b>.<br>
<br>In Dutch, it contrasts with<b> v</b>. This is <b>not</b> pronounced like English [v] but is a voiceless version of it: [v̥]. It differs from [f] in that it does not have any aspiration associated with it. (This is incorrectly given as [v] on the German webpage Hanne gave us.)<br>
<br>In Afrikaans, <b>w</b> is [v], and <b>v</b> is [f].<br><br>Remember that there is one big phonological difference between (1) Dutch, Afrikaans and Limburgish on the one hand and (2) Standard German, Low Saxon of Germany, and Standard English on the other hand: (1) voiceless stops and affricates have no aspiration, and (2) voiceless stops and affricates do have aspiration.<br>
