Subject: <span class="gI">LL-L "Language politics" 2011.05.21 (02) [EN]</span><br><br><div>Following the victory of the Scottish Nationalist Party in the
recent elections, the Scots have been promised a referendum on
independence.  I can only hope they vote for it, as it is the only hope
for English independence: the British government will never, ever, allow
 us the same right.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>However, if the two countries go their own ways, and hopefully the
other two (or one-and-a-half depending how you look at it) , I believe
it is typical politicians' hubris to think that they can somehow direct
or dictate the way people are going to speak. Commerce and communiction
will flow across all the borders as readily as now, and people will need
 to speak to each other.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>If Scots becomes an "official" language it will require some
definition of what that is; the various dialects of Scots across the
country must be at least as variable as English.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Scots will speak how they want to, when they want to, to whomever they want to. Rather as they do now.</div>
