no need to apologize at all, how could you know? I copied a part of an
article about "Diets" from the Dutch Wikipedia explaining why that word
is used less nowadays and so on:<br>

...Een reden dat het woord Diets minder in het moderne Nederlands wordt
gebruikt, is dat deze term met voorliefde werd gebruikt door 20e-eeuwse
fascisten van onder meer het Zwart Front en het VNV, en
nationaalsocialisten van de NSB. Zij gebruikten ideologisch geladen
termen als 'Diets' om te refereren aan de gezamenlijke of gedeelde
oorsprong van de Nederlandse volkeren en zo hun streefdoel van een
Heel-Nederland van een half mythische, half historische naam te
voorzien: 'Dietsland'. Vooral uit dit laatste blijkt het hervondene van
deze naamgeving. Zij wilden 'terug' naar de basis, het Verenigd
Koninkrijk der Nederlanden of de Zeventien Provinciën. Daarnaast
gebruikten ook minder of niet-fascistische bewegingen deze term, met
name het fel antisemitische, 'Nationaal-Solidaristische' Verdinaso, en
voorts de Protestants-Christelijke Oranjejeugd.<br>

De verfranste en in Wallonië gebruikte vertaling van Diets is Thiois.
Heelnederlanders plachten deze term te gebruiken voor Walen, die zij
beschouwen als geromaniseerde Germanen, wat historisch juist is, maar
dan moet men tot de achtste eeuw teruggaan. Het tot Belgicisme bekeerde
Verdinaso en de Rexisten hanteerden vlak vóór en tijdens de Duitse
bezetting tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog de term om aan te geven dat zij
meenden dat Walen meer germaans waren dan romaans en binnen het
pangermanisme van de nazi's pasten. Deze opvattingen behoren tot een
obscuur gedachtegoed. Het is hooguit in zoverre juist, dat Walen niet
zonder meer als behorend tot de Franstalige traditie kunnen worden
gerekend. Een Verdinaso-tijdschrift heette bijvoorbeeld "L'ordre
Thiois". Overigens is de connotatie van het woord Diets met de bezetting
en de collaboratie tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog grotendeels onterecht
omdat de Duitse bezetter alle Groot- en Heel-Nederlandse activiteit
verbood, zowel voor democratische "Dietsers" als voor aanhangers van de
Nieuwe Orde. Dit leidde tot wrevel en dissidenties binnen de
Eenheidsbeweging-VNV...<br>

Thanks for the sweet compliment to my translation, but we both know it
owes more to the innate properties of both languages than any input on
my part.<br>
As for “Diets”, we know it but it is not generally used; only rarely
does the context call for such niceness of distinction. Not everybody
can call up Netherlands roots; but "Diets" has if only partially
(because of the Hugenots - & that is a part to be proud of) a share
in all of us. However Brown Afrikaners resort to the term more often,
& to them we are 'Die Dietsmansvolk' or 'Diesman'. 'Gantang' is a
purely Slamaaier (Cape Malay) flourish.<br>
Yes, it is really only to us Caucasians that pigmentation is seen as a
useful mark of our kind. Most of Humanity sees other points as more
distinctive... Erm.<br>
Thankfully, my People had comparatively little exposure to Nazi dogmas,
& for better & for worse we were - we are a little naive to some
of its nicities. I should include myself in this, & offer a
post-scriptal apology to anyone that finds the use of the word
distasteful.<br>
