Dear Lowlanders,

Thanks to our own Mike Szelog's recruiting efforts and the kind translation efforts of Kevin Brousseau and Nicole Petiquay in Quebec, Canada, we now have the Wren story translated into two varieties of Cree:

My introduction to the Cree language is here:
http://lowlands-l.net/anniversary/cree-info.php

Being a widely used Indigenous North American language, Cree (Nēhiyawēwin) has a history of numerous language contacts and has influenced both neighboring Indigenous languages and has participated in the creation of various contact languages.
Less widely known and of particular interest to our forum is the fact that Cree also influenced the development of the Bungi creole spoken by some Red River Métis of Manitoba, Canada. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bungi_creole). It is occasionally said that Bungi creole goes back mostly to Scottish English. However, I am under the impression that it owes most to Scots, apparently mostly Insular Scots, Orcadian in the main.

Does any of you have more information about Bungi, perhaps even language samples? Many thanks in advance!

Regards,
Reinhard/Ron
Seattle, USA

Video/Audio:
