all three. However, I have the impression that “why” is the highest
register of the three. For example, I would say “how come” or “what for”
in a familiar context. Whereas, in a meeting
at my office I’d more likely use “why.”</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:Consolas">Sometimes, I
have occasion to train new employees. At the beginning of the class, I’d
probably use “why,” but as time went on and in an effort to show
familiarity, I’d say “how come” or “what for.”

come, why, what for) seem to be interchangeable to me. However, I could
see how there is a difference between “how come” and “what for.” I just
