<span lang="en-us"><font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">Another member mentioned the Hexensabbat (Walpurgisnacht?)</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"><font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">, which prompted me to check my handy-dandy Online Etymology Dictionary (</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><a href="http://www.etymonline.com/index.php" target="_blank"><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"><u><font color="#0000FF" face="Andalus" size="4">http://www.etymonline.com/index.php</font></u></span><span lang="en-us"></span></a><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"><font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">) for anything interesting about the English word ‘hex’, which I knew to be related to the German. I found that it comes from</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"> <font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">Pennsylvania German ‘hexe’, meaning to practice witchcraft. What struck me a bit was the verb</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"> <font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">does not end in an n, which made me think of wh</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"><font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">en I studied Dutch and how there are some varieties where the final n, although written, is not pronounced. </font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"> <font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">Perhaps a bit of Lowlandic influence on the variety of German that would find it</font></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"></span><span lang="en-us"><font color="#943634" face="Andalus" size="4">s way to Pennsylvania? <br>
