<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Consolas" lang="EN-US">I
 graduated from the University of Texas in 1984 with a BA in 
linguistics. At that time and in that place the dominant paradigm was 
generative linguistics. All of our classes
 had generative linguistics as a foundation.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Consolas" lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Consolas" lang="EN-US">We
 learned about structuralism, but it wasn’t the basis of our 
instruction. I recall a professor from Australia who wasn’t as enamored 
with generative linguistics as as the
 American ones, but he was the exception.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Consolas" lang="EN-US">Is there a new theory or paradigm within the field of linguistics nowadays?
