Subject: Language maintenance</font><span><br>
<br>Dear Lowlands Friends,<br><br>If you can read German subtitles you might enjoy watching this presentation about North Frisian and Low Saxon (Low German) language loyalty and its challenges in Germany's northernmost state of Schleswig-Holstein (which, realistically speaking, constitutes the southern part of the Jutland Peninsula, the northern part being under Danish rule)..<br>
<br><a href="goog_490633172">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwT3NEcOcUM</a></span><font><a href="http://.">.</a><br><br>And, as you may able to discern, the question of minority Danish keeps entering the equation</font></span><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font> (mostly based on ignorance among average Germans)</font></span>. <br>
<br>Germany's northernmost state ( the most multilingual state) of Germany has indigenous speakers of the following languages:<br></font></span><ul><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>Standard German (introduced lately, but nowadays predominant)</font></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>Low Saxon ("Low German," historically predominant)</font></span></li><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>Danish:</font></span><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"></span></li>
<ul><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>(Southern) Jutish</font></span></li><li>Standard Danish (because of official education policies)<span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"></span></li>
</ul><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>Frisian (several languages)</font></span></li><ul><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>North Frisian (several languages, both continental and insular)</font></span></li>
</ul><li><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>Romany<br></font></span></li></ul><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font>(Not to mention Turkish, Kurdish, Greek, Italian and other immigrant languages.)<br>
<br>(In ancient times there used to be West Slavic language varieties spoken in the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula and on the Danish island of Falster as well.)<br></font></span><br><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font><span id="result_box" class="" lang="da"><span class="hps"><span id="result_box" class="" lang="da"><span class="hps">Jeg er især interesseret i udtalelser fra vores danske, sønderjyske og nordfrisiske venner.</span></span></span></span></font></span><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><font><span id="result_box" class="" lang="da"><span class="hps"><span id="result_box" class="" lang="da"><span class="hps"></span></span></span><span class="hps"><br>
